Want to cut the amount of garbage your household generates in half? I’ve done so simply by RECYCING PLASTIC! I rinse out my daughters’ sports drink bottles, the fabric softener bottle, spaghetti sauce bottles, shampoo bottles, etc., and put them in a huge garbage bag in our outside kitchen. It takes about a month to collect two bags, which I then take to Pyramid Recycling in Harmon Industrial Park (646-8130). They only take plastics with the little triangle recycling symbol on the container, but most household plastic containers are recyclable these days. Yes, it’s a hassle, but it is my hope that our new garbage guys, the District Court-ordered trio of Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc., will one day initiate curbside recycling on the island like they do in many communities on the mainland. Until then, it’s really up to us to recycle because our small emerald gem here in the sapphire western Pacific has a finite amount of space, so let’s do our share to keep that space as emerald as possible!
